It’s on US Week events set for April 22-26

The UNMC Title IX Office and EMPOWER will be holding events the week of April 22-26 to mark “It’s on US Week.”

“It’s on US Week is a week of action to raise awareness and to prevent sexual assault,” said Carmen Sirizzotti, UNMC Title IX coordinator.

Events will include:

Monday, April 22: It’s On US – Start the day with US
7:30-9 a.m., Sorrell Center atrium

  • Donuts and coffee
  • Informational booth with giveaways, including consent magnets, “I Ask for Consent” buttons, bystander pocket cards and “I Ask for Digital Consent” palm card.

Tuesday, April 23: “What Are My Rights . . . and Who Will Help Me?”
Noon-1 p.m., Linder Reading Room, second floor, Sorrell Center
Speaker: Chief Charlotte Evans, interim chief of police/director of campus security and public safety for UNMC, the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Nebraska Medical Center.

  • When the unthinkable happens, how do I get help that is right for me? What will happen if I report? How do I find resources? Do I have options? Not knowing what to expect can leave another layer of trauma. Join Chief Evans as she shares what resources are available to, and what the rights are of a sexual assault survivor. Lunch will be provided for the first 50 attendees.

Thursday, April 25: “Sexual Assault Prevention and Advocacy”
Noon-12:50 p.m., Sorrell Center, Room 2010
Presenting Panel: Eileen Reilly, legal services manager, and Jacquie Gordon, volunteer and training coordinator, Women’s Center for Advancement (WCA)

  • WCA programs strategically address the many issues facing victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, while working to reduce the number of future victims through education and prevention. WCA provides a vital service in education and prevention for the community at large, to raise awareness about issues of power and control — because the truth is, nobody is immune to this epidemic. We all know someone who is affected by domestic violence or sexual assault. And it can happen to anyone, including you. The WCA goal is for everyone in Omaha to know about the WCA before they need its services, not afterwards. Lunch will be provided for the first 50 attendees.
