Drs. Hagge, Okwudi earn honors at 2019 MARC

Seven Department of Anesthesiology residents presented at the Midwest Anesthesia Resident’s Conference (MARC) held April 12-14 in Detroit, two of whom earned honors for their work.

CA3 resident Stephanie Okwudi, MD, earned second place in her pediatrics case session for her presentation titled, “Airway Management in a Hurler Syndrome Patient.” CA3 resident Matthew Hagge, DO, won third place in his airway case session for his presentation titled, “Awake Fiberoptic Intubation of Patient with Supraglottic Lesion Causing Ball-Valve Phenomenon.”

MARC has 34 member institutions, all of whom are midwestern academic institutions with anesthesiology resident programs. The seven residents were accompanied by Chairman Steven J. Lisco, MD, Residency Program Director Andrea Dutoit, MD, and MARC Faculty Coordinator Charles Walcutt, MD.

"Everyone did a fantastic job presenting their cases in front of their peers from other institutions,” Dr. Walcutt said. “The amount of time and hard work they put into their presentations was clear to the audience. These seven residents did a great job of representing UNMC and the challenging patients we take care of.”

The five other residents in attendance and their presentations were:

CA1:
Levi Zehr, MD, presented “A Case of Fibrolamelar Hepatocellular Carcinoma Resection in an Adolescent” in the general category.

CA-2:
Marcus Arthur, MD, presented “Left External Iliac Artery Avulsion with Sheath Withdrawal After TEVAR” in the cardiovascular category.
Mackenzie Laurila, DO, presented “Awake Oral Fiberoptic Intubation in a Patient with Substernal Goiter with Compressive Symptoms” in the airway category.
Sean Rajnic, MD, presented “Severe Tricuspid Regurgitation with Complete Destruction of the Septal Leaflet Secondary to Zoonotic Endocarditis” in the cardiovascular category.
