Dr. Hershberger receives Golden Apple Award from first-year students

Daniel Hershberger, MD, assistant professor, internal medicine-pulmonary and critical care, has received the Golden Apple Award from first-year medical students (Class of 2022).

A native of Milford, Neb., Dr. Hershberger joined the faculty in 2016. He earned his medical degree at UNMC. He also did his internal medicine residency at UNMC followed by a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care at Creighton University Medical Center.

This year was Dr. Hershberger’s first as a block director in the College of Medicine curriculum. He was responsible for the Respiratory Block.

Here are some of the comments he received from his nominators:

  • "In his first year as a block director, Dr. Hershberger wholly devoted himself to students’ success throughout the four-week Respiratory Block."
  • "Dr. Hershberger was absolutely incredible as a block director, professor, and all-around individual to be around during the block."
  • "With the great leadership he provides, things will only continue to improve for future students who get to interact with Dr. Hershberger."

Asked to describe why Dr. Hershberger should be granted this award, students listed:

  • his presence in the lecture hall to contribute clinical context for guest lectures;
  • his true devotion to the success and evolution of the POPS curriculum; and
  • his timely yet in-depth answers to questions both in person and via message.

In the award’s nomination form, a number of students noted the degree to which they had developed a personal connection with Dr. Hershberger and felt his genuine concern for each student’s success.

Dr. Hershberger’s passion for pulmonary and critical care medicine is founded in his philosophy – "I enjoy helping patients and families through some of the most difficult times in their lives," he said.
