Members of the UNMC/Nebraska Medicine community are invited to take part in the Heartland Pride Parade on June 29.

June marks National LGBT Pride Month, and the UNMC/Nebraska Medicine LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance is inviting colleagues to celebrate by attending Pride Month events. The culminating event is the Heartland Pride parade on Saturday, June 29, at 10 a.m. in Omaha’s Old Market, and festival at 1:30 p.m. at Baxter Arena.

“In the three years the LGBTQ+ employee alliance has existed, we have seen rapid growth and heartfelt support from our colleagues,” said co-chair Emily Glenn, interim associate director of education and research services at UNMC’s McGoogan Library of Medicine. “We hope to continue that growth and education to make this institution a place for LGBTQ patients, students and employees to thrive.”

Those wishing to join the alliance should email LGBTQEmployeeAlliance@unmc.edu to receive regular communications about involvement. The group focuses on promoting an accepting culture through policy and process evaluation, educational seminars and colleague networking in social settings.

June was chosen as LGBT Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall riots, an important moment in the gay rights movement, which occurred at the end of June 1969. This year’s Pride Month celebration marks the 50th anniversary of Pride.
