The UNMC House Officers Association held its annual End of Year Grill Out last weekend in the Ruth and Bill Scott Student Plaza. Residents and fellows and their families were treated to free barbecue, beverages, ice cream, a raffle and games.

College of Nursing faculty receive diversity grant funding
College of Nursing faculty Trina Aguirre, Ph.D., and Marcia Shade, Ph.D., received word that their Faculty Diversity grant submissions were selected for funding in 2019-2021. The award is for up to $50,000 per year for up to two years.

Dr. Shade’s funding will support research projects related to user-centered technology that helps older adults with pain self-management, networking and grant proposals to promote a culture of diversity through mentoring underrepresented students in nursing and nursing research.

Dr. Aguirre’s grant will provide support for additional data analysis and manuscript preparation of her current study, “Assessment and Treatment Applied to Food Addiction to Encourage Self-Management of Obesity in a Rural Healthy Behaviors Clinic.” The results will be incorporated into proposals to further research addressing obesity in rural and minority populations. The grant also will provide research and outreach funding.

Dr. Caverzagie elected to AMA’s Council on Medical Education
Kelly Caverzagie, M.D., recently was elected to serve for a four-year term on the American Medical Association’s Council on Medical Education. The council recommends educational policies to the AMA House of Delegates and recommends to the AMA Board of Trustees the appointments of representatives to medical education organizations, accrediting bodies and certification boards.

Dr. Caverzagie is associate dean for educational strategy at UNMC and vice president for education at Nebraska Medicine. In addition to collaborating with other key organizations in medical education, the council supports the accreditation of medical education programs and gathers and disseminates medical education data and products/services.

The council focuses on issues and initiatives related to four areas:

  • Undergraduate medical education;
  • Graduate medical education;
  • Continuing medical education; and
  • Continuing professional development.
