The campus community is invited to the fourth candidate forum for the director of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer on Monday, July 15.
The forum, which will run from noon to 1 p.m., in the Yanney Conference Room of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, will feature Barry Sleckman, M.D., Ph.D., associate director of the Meyer Cancer Center at the Weill Cornell Medical College and co-chair of the Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis Program between Weill Cornell and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Following a brief presentation, titled “Cancer (Center) Evolution,” Dr. Sleckman will take part in a question-and-answer session.
Dr. Sleckman completed his M.D. and Ph.D. (immunology) at Harvard Medical School in 1990 followed by an internship and residency in medicine and a fellowship in infectious diseases at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. In 1998, after completing a post-doctoral fellowship in molecular immunology in the laboratory of Dr. Frederick Alt at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Sleckman started as an assistant professor in the department of pathology and immunology at the Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) in St. Louis.
His laboratory focuses on elucidating pathways required for immune system development and on understanding DNA damage responses, especially as they apply to cancer and the development of novel cancer therapeutics. He has been continuously funded by the NIH (NCI and NIAID) since 2000. In 2008, he became the Conan Professor of Pathology and Immunology and chief of the Laboratory and Genomic Medicine Division, where he grew the faculty to more than twice its size over seven years through the recruitment of physicians, scientists and physician-scientists.
Dr. Sleckman was integrally involved in leadership of the Siteman Cancer Center (SCC), an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center at WUSM. He was a member of the SCC senior leadership and over 10 years held positions as co-leader of the Solid Tumor Therapeutics Program, associate director for shared resources and associate director for basic science. He was director of the graduate program in immunology and the founding director of the Physician Scientist Training Program in the department of pathology and immunology.
Dr. Sleckman has received numerous awards including the Goldstein Award for Excellence in Medical Education. He has been elected to AOA, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians and as a Fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Lafayette College. He serves on the advisory boards of several cancer centers, the Keystone Symposia and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.
In 2015, Dr. Sleckman moved his laboratory to the department of pathology and laboratory medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College, where he is associate director of the Meyer Cancer Center and co-chairs the Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis Program.
