UNMC’s Sambol takes part in health security event on Capitol Hill

Tony Sambol, assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Pathology and Microbiology, participated recently in the Association of Public Health Laboratories Global Health Security Agenda-Capitol Hill Day. The event meant to raise the awareness of key leaders in the Senate and House Appropriation Committees to increase funding to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The funds would increase preparedness for laboratory systems in countries throughout the world. The Public Health Laboratories at UNMC receive funding for bioterrorism and chemical terrorism preparedness through the CDC.

Global chef to share the flavors of Chile on Oct. 7

Chef Francisco “Pancho” Layera will serve the flavors of Chile on Monday, Oct. 7, between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., in Nebraska Cafe. Coming from a family of chefs, Chef Layera has had amazing culinary experiences while living in Europe and Central America. Now creating incredible dishes for Sodexo Chile, he’s truly a global chef, having served guests in France, Italy, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and North America. He is the founder and past president of the Chilean Association of Chefs and was on the 2015 and 2019 Chilean tours for Bocuse d’Or, the most prestigious gastronomic tournament in the world.

Healthcare Security and Safety Week set for Oct. 13-19

The UNMC Public Safety and Security Department will be participating in Healthcare Security and Safety Week Oct. 13-19. According to the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety, “The theme for Healthcare Security and Safety Week recognizes the importance of security and safety in healthcare and acknowledges the strong commitment, diligence and care officers display in their practice and profession.”

The UNMC Public Safety and Security Department encourages members of the campus community to feel free to take a moment to show support and appreciation for all of the hard work that officers do to keep UNMC and Nebraska Medicine safe.

Seminar offers information on pathways to book publication

Lydia Kang, M.D., author and assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, will be a member of the BookFAQs! panel Oct. 5, at the Metropolitan Community College Fort Omaha campus, Building 23, Room 120 A & B.

The panel will educate writers on the different pathways to book publication. In addition to Dr. Kang, author of books such as “Beautiful Poison,” “Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything” and other titles, panelists will include:

  • Scott McPherson, M.D., author and faculty physician in family medicine at Nebraska Medicine;
  • Liz Kay, teacher, poet, and founding editor of Spark Wheel Press and the journal “burntdistrict”;
  • Jeff Barnes, an Omaha-based writer;
  • N. L. Sharp, an author and educational writing consultant from Fremont, Neb., as well as the owner and publisher at Prairieland Press; and
  • Marcia Jussel, who worked for 13 years as a community business development manager at Barnes & Noble.

BookFAQs! was created by Dr. Kang and Kay to discuss writing and the publishing business with the Omaha community.

The event is free and open to the public.
