The UNMC/Nebraska Medicine LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance is hosting a Come Out for Cupcakes event to celebrate National Coming Out Day on Friday, Oct. 11, from 2-3 p.m. in two locations: the Sorrell Center Alumni Commons and the third floor of the University Tower, near the Nebraska Cafe exit.

National Coming Out Day was founded in the United States in 1988 to inspire courage within the LGBTQ community, and with the belief that increased exposure to beloved LGBTQ persons would reduce homophobia.

“Members of the LGBTQ community never really stop coming out,” said Danielle Beebe, alliance member and communications specialist for the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology. “Any time we meet a new person and the conversation turns to personal matters, many LGBTQ persons confront a moment of fear before determining if it’s safe to reveal your identity. When allies show up for events like National Coming Out Day or in other ways, it’s incredibly healing for our community.”
