Steven Gedde, M.D., director and vice chair of education at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, will be the guest speaker Jan. 16 and 17, for the Carl B. Camras, M.D., Memorial Lecture, as well as campus talks.
Dr. Gedde, a professor of ophthalmology, has lectured nationally and internationally and authored or coauthored more than 300 articles, book chapters, and abstracts. He has been listed among America’s Top Doctors, Best Doctors in America, and Florida Super Doctors.
His talk targeted to ophthalmologists will be on Jan. 16 at the Happy Hollow Club, titled “Lessons Learned from Glaucoma Surgical Trials,” and will address the translation of results from clinical trials into clinical practice and findings of several landmark trials involving glaucoma surgery. The lecture is part of the Truhlsen Eye Institute Distinguished Lecture Series and is hosted by the UNMC Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. The talk is being held to coincide with January being Glaucoma Awareness Month.
Dr. Gedde, who is an expert in glaucoma, also will hold talks on campus on Jan. 17 in the Truhlsen Eye Institute third floor auditorium.
Campus talks on Jan. 17 will be held at the below times and locations:
- 6:30 a.m. (breakfast), 7 to 8 a.m. lecture — “Complications of Trabeculectomy for Glaucoma.” Dr. Gedde will discuss clinical features of complications following glaucoma filtering surgery, measures to avoid complications and managing complications. The talk qualifies for one hour of CME credit. Register here.
- 8 to 10 a.m. — “Glaucoma Case Presentations.” The discussion is targeted at residents and includes diagnosis of clinical problems, testing to evaluate patients and an evidence-based approach in managing various ocular conditions. No registration required.
Dr. Gedde received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed his residency training in ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, where he also served as chief resident. He did a glaucoma fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and has served as the residency program director there since 1999.
Since 2017, Dr. Gedde has served on the board of directors of the American Glaucoma Society and the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has served on the editorial boards for Ophthalmology, Journal of Academic Ophthalmology, EyeNet, Ocular Surgery News, Ophthalmology Management, and EyeWorld.
He is a recipient of numerous awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology.
Department to hold Low Vision Awareness Event
A presentation for Low Vision Awareness Month will be held on Feb. 7 from 7 to 8 a.m. on “Clinical-Pathologic Correlations in Eye Pathology: Pearls and Pitfalls.” Tatyana Milman, M.D., associate professor of ophthalmology and pathology, anatomy, and cell biology, Wills Eye Hospital, Ocular Pathology, will speak at the event at the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute Auditorium, Room 3001.
