UNMC will observe Black History Month with several events, and soul food offerings in the Nebraska and Clarkson Cafes, beginning today with the third annual Gospel Fest Celebration, which will be held in the Durham Outpatient Center atrium from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

The Black History Month committee will hold random drawings for Soul Food meal tickets and other giveaways at each event. Must be in attendance to win.
This free concert will feature a stellar line-up of local celebrity gospel and spoken-word artists which include:
- Singer Chris Brookins;
- Nelson Mandela Elementary Meerkats;
- Recording Artist Eric Jordan;
- Liturgical Dancer Shavona Ware;
- Spoken Work Artist Felicia Webster and others.
There also will be soul food available for purchase in the Nebraska and Clarkson Cafes today from 11 am – 2 pm. Today’s menu will include catfish, spaghetti, collard greens, black eyed peas, sweet potato pie and cornbread.
A preview of additional events taking place this month are listed below.
On Feb. 11, a Black History Month trivia challenge will be published in UNMC Today. The challenge will award prizes, donated by the UNMC Bookstore, the Munroe-Meyer Institute and the UNMC Department of Human Resources. Four people will be chosen at random from among those who answer all the questions correctly, and there will also be a grand prize for the first person to respond with all of the correct answers. Submissions must be sent to Jacqueline Hankins jacqueline.hankins@unmc.edu no later than Feb. 12.
On Feb. 13, Dominique Morgan, an Omaha native and the national director of Black and Pink, the largest prison abolitionist organization in the United States, will be on campus to present his talk on “The Impact of Health Professionals in a Community in Crisis.” Lunch will be provided for the first 35 attendees. This event is sponsored by the UNMC Department of Human Resources, UNMC College of Medicine, UNMC College of Nursing, GRADS (Graduates & Professionals Representing Achievement Diversity and Service) and the Nebraska Medicine Department of Human Resources.
On Feb. 20, Anthony Johnson Jr., a graduate student in the UNMC College of Public Health, will be facilitating a panel presentation surrounding the intersection of environmental justice, racial equity and health of underserved populations. The presentation is from noon-1 p.m. in the Harold M. and Beverly Maurer Center for Public Health, Room 3013. Refreshments will be provided for the first 30 attendees.
