Lora Arnold, assistant professor in the UNMC Department Pathology and Microbiology, retired from UNMC on April 30.

Arnold, a native of Cozad, Nebraska, was at UNMC for 43 years and also received her master’s in pathology and microbiology from the university in 2007.

She joined UNMC in 1977 as a medical technologist in the division of clinical chemistry, becoming technical coordinator in 1987. In 1993, she began participating in research in chemical carcinogenesis and toxicology, first as an instructor and then as an assistant professor — work she continued until her retirement.

“In addition to being an outstanding researcher, Lora has mentored and cared for numerous graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and guests who came to study and work in our department, and they have gone on to prominent positions in academia, government and industry in their respective fields,” said Samuel Cohen, M.D., Ph.D., Havlik-Wall Professor of Oncology in the department. “All who have worked with Lora appreciate her knowledge, skills, and especially her organizational abilities to keep complex programs well coordinated, particularly challenging when multiple institutions and different countries are involved in the projects.”

Arnold retires, Cohen said, with a prominent national and international reputation in toxicology, including more than 90 publications and five book chapters related to a variety of chemicals, especially inorganic and organic arsenicals, and numerous presentations at national and international meetings.

She has been active in the Society of Toxicology, holding leadership roles in the Regional Central States Chapter, and served as senior counselor for the Society of Toxicology Carcinogenesis Specialty Section.

“Lora is an outstanding, exceptional individual and she will be sincerely missed after she leaves the UNMC campus,” Dr. Cohen said. “We wish her well in her further pursuits.”
