The UNMC Faculty Women’s Club is selling hand-sewn masks on the UNMC campus to raise money for student scholarships.

The UNMC Faculty Women’s Club will hold mask sales for student scholarships each Wednesday (weather permitting) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the Clarkson Tower/Hixson-Lied Building on the UNMC Omaha campus.
The effort is merely the latest in 100 years of support provided by the organization. Since 1920, the UNMC Faculty Women’s Club has supported health professionals through its annual fundraising and scholarship program, making vital contributions to all UNMC campuses.
The idea of selling hand-sewn masks came about after Mary Gurney, club secretary, took on a volunteer role to sew masks for UNMC medical students to distribute throughout the community.
“During our first board meeting this year, we were trying to think of ways to raise more scholarship money,” Gurney said. In just a week of selling masks, they’ve raised $840 dollars to go toward the scholarship program.
“We’ve sustained this organization for 100 years. We all have an interest in continuing students’ education in health care,” said Theresa Olsen, marketing director.
The Faculty Women’s Club not only supports student scholarships, but it also provides and promotes social connections and leadership opportunities for women throughout the medical campus. Club President Barbara Hurlbert, MD, says that the organization will continue to strive to build a sense of community on campus and hopes to meet new members.
