Registration open for next Design Thinking Boot Camp

Registration is now open for the 2020 Design Thinking Boot Camp, which will be held on Oct. 26 – Oct. 28. This intensive three-day workshop will help attendees explore and generate new ideas to creatively solve problems. Participants will use design thinking methods and tools, focusing on individual development and team collaboration. Register now for the Design Thinking Boot Camp.

“Design thinking is a process that guides you through problem solving with a human-centered lens,” said Jennifer K. Kallio, DDS, one of the event leaders and assistant professor in the adult restorative department at UNMC College of Dentistry. “We learn how to empathize with the point of view from our patients, students, community and health care colleagues in order to gain insight to the problems they are facing and come up with innovative ideas. It challenges and changes the way we approach problems and how we solve them.”

The event is a collaboration between UNMC’s Academic Affairs, College of Dentistry and Munroe-Meyer Institute. The boot camp will tackle the real-world design challenge of how to ensure UNMC provides the best dental patient experience in the country for people with disabilities.

The 2020 Design Thinking Boot Camp is an opportunity for UNMC faculty and staff to learn from two national experts, Kathryn Segovia, PhD, head of learning experience design at Stanford University d.school, and Doug Dietz, principal design thinker at GE Healthcare. Dietz was the individual who created the “Adventure Series” MRI scanners that are now used at children’s hospitals around the nation. The innovative scanners are a direct result of his attendance at the d.school.

“We are incredibly lucky to have two national experts in design thinking who will facilitate this year’s boot camp,” said Dele Davies, MD, senior vice chancellor for academic affairs. “Dr. Segovia’s extensive experience in helping people look at problems in a new way will be a valuable asset in developing creative solutions, and Doug Dietz brings unique insights that will help demonstrate how Design Thinking integrates into the health care world.”

The last day to register is Oct. 5. The event is open to all UNMC faculty and staff; however, participation is limited to 36 individuals. Early registration is recommended. The subsidized cost of the event is $1,750. In the event the registrant is unable to attend, they are able to transfer their registration to someone else.

Please note, for the health and well-being of all attendees, the boot camp will follow all current UNMC campus safety and social distancing guidelines.
