COM resident of the month

Joseph Lamar, MD

Joseph Lamar, MD

  • Name: Joseph Lamar, MD
  • Medical school you attended/year you graduated: UNMC. Graduated 2014.
  • Residency/fellowship at UNMC: Pulmonary and Critical Care
  • Program director: Craig Piquette, MD

How long is your training program and how long have you been at UNMC? Three years of fellowship. Before the fellowship, I was four years at UNMC.

What do you like the most about your training program? I love the wide variety of patients that we see and also that we get a very comprehensive training that will allow all graduates to safely practice medicine when done with training.

What challenges do you foresee in graduate medical education in the future? The biggest challenge in graduate medical education is being properly trained. With the increase in litigation, autonomy as a learner is becoming a thing of the past. Medical students used to be able to write orders and practice medicine. That is no longer the case.

List some accomplishments that you are proud of:

  • Matching into a fellowship.
  • Mentoring a young man I met in Michigan.

Tell us three things about you that others may not know:

  • I am a twin.
  • I am the first MD in my family.
  • I was once a childhood actor.
