SHARING Clinics annual fun run/walk set for April 15

SHARING Week March 20-24

Gov. Dave Heineman has proclaimed March 20-24 SHARING Week in Nebraska, in honor of the SHARING Clinics.

Each day this week, from noon to 12:45 p.m., information on the clinics will be available outside of the Nebraska Cafe. Students will be stationed at the table to answer questions.

The SHARING Clinics are sponsoring the second annual SHARING the Trail fun run/walk to support the costs of providing health care to Omaha’s underserved populations.

SHARING the Trail will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, at the Chalco Hills Recreation Area, near 156th Street and Giles Road. Two-, four-, and six-mile options are available for the noncompetitive event. Prizes will be awarded throughout the day.

The SHARING Clinics are student-run, faculty-sponsored health care resources for low-income families. The clinics are staffed and administrated by medical, nursing, pharmacy and allied health students at UNMC. Students from each discipline work together to provide quality, low cost health care to Omaha’s medically underserved populations. Under the mentorship of volunteer community health care providers, students are able to apply classroom lessons to real life situations.

Since its first day of operation in 1997, the SHARING Clinic has served thousands of people in the Omaha community. In 2001, the RESPECT clinic opened due to the growing concern of STDs in Omaha. The clinic provides HIV and STD testing, treatment and education. In 2002, the GOODLIFE Clinic opened in North Omaha to treat patients with type II diabetes. Each year the SHARING Clinics serve more than 1,400 people who do not have health insurance and are at or below the federal poverty level.

Event registration is $25 for an individual, $75 for a group of four and $15 for students. All participants will receive a T-shirt and a chance to win assorted prizes. Various event sponsorship levels also are available.
