Theft from motor vehicles is on the rise in Omaha, and the UNMC/Nebraska Medicine campus has not been immune.
The thieves typically break a window and take items in view.
“Although this type of criminal activity often happen at night, these thieves are bold, with the last three happening in broad daylight,” said Chief Charlotte Evans.
Incidents have happened in both surface lots and parking garages alike.
Prevention steps
Here are some steps to prevent theft:
- Park in well-lit areas.
- Avoid parking next to larger vehicles as they can act as concealment to thieves.
- Park near higher traffic areas (entrance of the lot, nearer the street, etc.).
- Leave valuables at home or be sure they are out of view.
- When parking on campus, contact Public Safety immediately at 402-559-5111 when observing suspicious activity.
