picture disc.Mark Mailliard, M.D., has been named chief of the section of gastroenterology and hepatology (GI), in UNMC’s Department of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Mailliard has served as acting chief since September 2004. As chief, he will amplify efforts to expand the section’s clinical services, academic research activity and education involvement.

“UNMC’s Department of Internal Medicine looks forward to Dr. Mailliard’s continued leadership and the progression of GI’s academic success,” said Lynell Klassen, M.D., chairman of UNMC’s Department of Internal Medicine.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to lead the Gastroenterology Division,” Dr. Mailliard said. “UNMC gastroenterology has a long tradition of excellence in education, patient care and research. The field is expanding at a break neck pace and it is truly exciting to consider the potential for our program to impact gastroenterology diseases on a local and national scale. Fortunately, I have been provided with a strong nucleus and foundation on which to build our program.”

Dr. Mailliard accomplished his undergraduate work at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., and earned his medical degree at UNMC in 1980. His residency and a research fellowship in the Liver Study Unit also were accomplished at UNMC. In 1987, he completed a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Florida Health Sciences Center in Gainesville, Fla., where he served first as an assistant professor and then associate professor in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

In 1995, he relocated to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas, where he served as professor of medicine and director of the Division of Gastroenterology until returning to UNMC in 1998. Dr. Mailliard also was chief of the gastroenterology section at the Omaha Veterans Affairs Medical Center until July 2005.

Board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology, Dr. Mailliard is an oft-invited speaker and has more than 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and two book chapters to his credit.
