Dr. Fadul named to College of Medicine DEI position

Nada Fadul, MD, has been appointed the assistant dean of diversity, equity and inclusion education programs for the UNMC College of Medicine Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Shirley Delair, MD, associate dean for diversity, equity and inclusion, announced the appointment Monday.

“Dr. Fadul has extensive experience in studying, presenting and publishing on the impact of social determinants of health, racial and ethnic disparities on HIV health outcomes and, most recently, on the risk of COVID-19 infection,” Dr. Delair said. “This experience will help advance integration of DEI into medical education for all trainees as a way to focus on how to improve patient outcome, particularly for marginalized and underserved populations.”

In her new role, Dr. Fadul will support the DEI office in integrating concepts of diversity, equity and inclusion into the curriculum of both undergraduate and graduate medical education. She will work on developing evaluations for both instructors and trainees to monitor effectiveness of teaching. She also will work on developing workshop to assist instructors in enhancing their current lectures to address DEI.

“It has been almost four decades since Secretary Margaret Heckler sounded the alarm about the high rates of death in minority populations; it’s about time to systematically prepare current and future physicians for addressing these disparities,” Dr. Fadul said. “I am fully committed to working with leaders, educators, trainees and students to make UNMC COM a frontrunner in integrating health disparities in medical education.”

Dr. Fadul also is an associate professor of infectious diseases in the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine and the medical director of the Specialty Care Center.
