Director’s message: Moving past the challenges of 2020

Let’s be honest for a moment — 2020 was a tumultuous, challenging year.

For many, the last year has been fraught with some combination of long hours, stress, working from home, a pandemic, civil unrest and general exhaustion. But together, we have made it through — only to be greeted by this arctic blast called February.

Like many people, I’ve at times escaped the cold (and the stresses of 2020) by enjoying a good binge on Netflix. I have been particularly drawn to comedies as a much-needed break from everything going on around us. I found myself drawing personal inspiration from various shows that offer themes of resiliency and teamwork.

Interestingly, last year a University of Melbourne study (explained here in an interesting piece from the Toronto Globe and Mail) showed that binge-watching our favorite television shows, as opposed to watching them weekly, causes our memories of them to fade faster.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could do that for 2020?

It was a year that overwhelmed us. Just when you thought you had things figured out, life threw you another curve.

In these situations, when it all begins to run together, we can let negative self-talk bring us down. We can judge ourselves. Sometimes, we can judge others. Acknowledge those moments. Learn from them.

Spring is coming. I look forward to sharing it with you.
