Events planned to carry on Dr. Meyer’s legacy

picture disc.Funding of the LeeRoy Meyer Award Fund for Excellence in Internal Medicine — to carry on Dr. Meyer’s legacy of quality clinical education for future physicians — shifted into high gear with the recent establishment of the Web site at www.unmc.edu/leeroy.

An online auction of some of Dr. Meyer’s personal belongings is now open for bids with additional memorabilia offerings planned for the near future.

An evening dedicated to the memory of Dr. Meyer is being planned for Saturday, June 3, at the Strategic Air & Space Museum, located off I-80 between Omaha and Lincoln. The evening will begin with a reception, silent auction, museum self-tour and flight simulator rides from 5 to 7 p.m. Dinner will follow, with the program scheduled to include a video presentation of Dr. Meyer recollections and memories and an impersonation contest.

Registration to participate in the video presentation or the impersonation contest may be completed online at www.unmc.edu/leeroy. Dinner and table reservations also may be made at www.unmc.edu/leeroy by May 12. A catalog of items to be auctioned the evening of June 3 is available for preview at this Web site.

Dr. Meyer received his education at UNMC and was a 41-year faculty member of the Section of General Internal Medicine. He was honored with the Golden Apple teaching award more than 20 times, became one of a handful to be inducted into the Golden Apple Hall of Fame and was the recipient of many other awards for excellence in clinical medical education.

Following his unexpected death in 2005, Dr. Meyer’s family donated many of his personal items to the Section of General Internal Medicine. Proceeds from the sale of these items and proceeds realized from the June 3 event will be used to establish a lecture series and an endowed chair in Dr. Meyer’s memory.
