UNMC to host SNIP-COVID-19 virtual workshop April 9

The Society on NeuroImmune Pharmacology (SNIP) is hosting an April 9 virtual workshop on COVID-19 at 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. UNMC video operations is providing Zoom webinar hosting for the event.

Presenting researchers from UNMC will join world-renowned leaders in the field of neuroimmune pharmacology, including Howard Gendelman, MD, chair and professor of the UNMC Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience. Dr. Gendelman is the editor-in-chief of SNIP’s official journal, the Journal of Neuroimmune Pharmacology (JNIP).

This workshop recognizes the important contributions of SNIP members who study COVID-19, with regards to basic and clinical sciences as well as therapeutic and vaccine development. The COVID-19 workshop also entails the publication of a special issue on COVID-19 in the Journal of NeuroImmune Pharmacology (JNIP). This JNIP special issue plans to publish abstracts and selected manuscripts from the workshop talks.

The workshop consists of four symposia:

• Molecular approaches to COVID-19 pathogenesis and underlying mechanisms;
• Therapeutic and vaccine approaches to COVID-19;
• Early career investigator talks; and
• Diversity and Inclusion SNIP Committee (DISC) Program: Well-being and reflections.

Student organization re-registration begins April 5

Beginning in 2021, every student organization must go through an annual re-registration process. The re-registration process will be open from April 5th through April 30th on ENGAGE. It is the responsibility of organization leaders to complete this process.

Once the re-registration process is complete, the student organization will be listed as “active” on ENGAGE until April of the following academic year. Organizations subject to disciplinary sanctions may not participate in the re-registration process.

Instructions for student leaders:

• Log in to ENGAGE and click “Manage” in the top menu to view the Action Center homepage.
• Under “My Memberships,” click “Register” in the adjacent gray box.
• Click “Next” to navigate to your organization or search the organization name. If your organization is eligible for re-registration, you will see a blue “Re-Register” button next to your organization name.
• Follow the prompts to complete the re-registration process and update any needed information.

The Student Life Inclusion and Diversity Office (SLIDO) in the division of Student Success is now overseeing the management of student organizations and student events in ENGAGE. SLIDO’s mission is to advocate for the diversity, equity and inclusive excellence through the development and implementation of best practices and programs that foster student’s success. The Office of Community Engagement will continue to manage community administration and will work with student organizations to adopt best practices for connecting with communities.

Nebraska Drug Discovery & Development Pipeline Symposium set for May

The UNMC community is invited to participate in the 2021 Nebraska Drug Discovery & Development Pipeline (ND3P) Symposium, which will be held virtually on May 20-21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The interactive, two-day symposium will feature world leaders in drug discovery in such areas as in silico screening, cryo-EM, medicinal chemistry and engineering biomaterials.

The format will be entirely virtual, with opportunities to interact with both internationally renowned external speakers and top NU researchers, both in the larger sessions and in breakout sessions. Participants will have an opportunity to learn about activities and core capabilities that already have been developed under the ND3P, contribute to plans for the future evolution of the pipeline and identify new directions/potential collaborators for their own research programs.

The ND3P arose out of the NU systemwide Big Ideas competition and has evolved into a strong scientific partnership between UNL and UNMC.
