Scott Porter, MD, will speak on “How and Why Should White Dudes Engage?” from 9-9:45 a.m. this morning at a Zoom event open to the entire campus.
Dr. Porter’s presentation, which is presented by the UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation as part of this morning’s residency graduation, will discuss engaging more people in diversity efforts.
Dr. Porter’s discussion is powerful and important, said Kevin Garvin, MD, chair of the orthopaedic surgery department.
“The orthopaedic surgery department has traditionally brought impactful speakers to campus,” Dr. Garvin said. “Dr. Porter’s message of diversity is a timely and important one for UNMC, and we are pleased to invite the entire community to attend his lecture.”
Dr. Porter is currently a professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of South Carolina School Of Medicine, Greenville; an adjunct assistant professor in the department of bioengineering at Clemson University and a consulting physician for Shriners Hospitals for Children-Greenville.
He also is the former vice president of equity and inclusion at Prisma Health-Upstate and the former residency program director in the department of orthopaedic surgery at the Prisma Health-Upstate, Greenville, South Carolina.
Dr. Porter serves on a number of boards, including that of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He also is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Aspen Global Leadership Network, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Riley Institute Diversity Leadership Initiative and the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society.
