The medical center is hosting a virtual event as well as bringing food trucks to campus as part of efforts to mark Juneteenth.
The University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Cynthia Robinson, PhD, chair of the UNO Department of Black Studies, will speak on June 18 from 1-2 p.m. on “Jubilee: Celebrating Juneteenth and the History of the Emancipation Proclamation.”
The presentation is sponsored by the African American/Black Alliance (AABA) at Nebraska Medicine and the Interdisciplinary Association of Minority Health Professionals of the Omaha Metropolitan Area (I AM HOME).
The Emancipation Proclamation, signed in 1865, did not mark the end of slavery. In 1865, Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas, on June 19 with news that the war had ended and that all enslaved people in the United States of America were free. This event is celebrated as Juneteenth.
Dr. Robinson’s presentation will explore the journey from the Emancipation Proclamation to Juneteenth.

The AABA also is inviting food trucks to campus.
