The role of UNMC in providing science-based research is important in helping state senators such as himself make good policy decisions, said John Cavanaugh on a recent visit to UNMC.

Sen. Cavanaugh represents the ninth legislative district in Nebraska, part of which includes the UNMC east end of campus.

“I’m not surprised at the great work UNMC is doing, in terms of educational advancements, pioneering new technology and creating jobs, but it was reaffirming to see those things up close,” he said.

As part of his visit, Sen. Cavanaugh got to hear from experts from the UNMC College of Public Health talk about environmental health, as well as tour the Wigton Heritage Center and learn about the academic medical center’s more than 100-year history.

His afternoon also included a tour of the Davis Global Center, where he learned about the advancements in simulation, as well as augmented and virtual reality, and how those are used to enhance the education of health professions students.

“I’d love to come back to see more, and I’d love to see this premier academic medical center continue to grow,” he said.
