Med center events recognize Hispanic Heritage Month

Members of the UNMC and Nebraska Medicine communities are invited to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of educational and cultural events. Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

The first 25 people who register through ENGAGE and attend any of the starred events below, either in person or online, will receive a complimentary food voucher to use at Sodexo dining locations.

*Perceptions of Healthcare in the Latino Community | Thursday, Sept. 23, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

The UNMC Office of Community Engagement, in partnership with the South Omaha Community Cares Council, is hosting a panel discussion titled "Perceptions of Healthcare in the Latino Community." Participants will view a short film featuring Latino community members telling their stories about health and healthcare. A panel discussion with the audience, featuring local Chicano activist Ben Salazar as well as other community leaders will follow to cover major themes from the film.

Food Tour (Sal Mex, 709 S 24th St) | Tuesday, Sept. 28, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Discover the Hispanic food scene at The Heart of Omaha Food Tour as we bring you to the area's most historic and diverse neighborhoods rich with culture and history. Participants will receive a dish at each of these local restaurants throughout our community. First come, first served. Must present NUID.

*Meat Packing Plants Research Panel Part 1| Wednesday, Sept. 29, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Athena Ramos, PhD (assistant professor, UNMC Department of Health Promotion) will serve as host for the discussion. Guest panelists include:

  • Joshua Santarpia, PhD,associate professor, UNMC Department of Pathology and Microbiology

*Intersection of Hispanic Heritage, Medicine, and Domestic Violence | Wednesday, Oct. 6, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

The Student Life Inclusion and Diversity Office (SLIDO), EMPOWER, and the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center (GSRC) are joining forces during Hispanic Heritage Month and National Domestic Violence Awareness Month to present a discussion on the intersection of Hispanic culture and domestic violence through a medical lens.

*Meat Packing Plants Broader Context Part 2| Tuesday, October 12, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

This event is meant to bring awareness to the impacts the COVID pandemic had on meatpacking plant workers and their families. The panel will include perspectives from Nebraska Appleseed and Heartland Workers Center.

Juegos & Prizes | Friday, Oct. 15, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
