Health experts to take vaccination questions at Oct. 2 event
UNMC physicians will answer questions about COVID-19 vaccines during a community event on Saturday, Oct. 2 from noon to 4 p.m.
The free, family-friendly event — hosted by the Omaha Economic Development Corporation and titled the "Power of Prevention" — will be in the parking lot at 2221 N. 24 St.
A live Q&A will take place at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. with the Mocha Docs of Omaha, a local group of Black women health care experts that support local community activities such as vaccination discussions to improve vaccination rates in the Black community. Mocha Doc participants at the Oct. 2 event will include UNMC’s Shirley Delair, MD, division of pediatric infectious diseases; Andrea Jones, MD, family medicine; Jasmine Marcelin, MD, division of infectious diseases; Sharon Stoolman, MD, division of hospital medicine; and Lucille Woodard, MD, family medicine physician, Department of Veterans Affairs.
During the event, Nebraska Appleseed will be on hand for voter registration and Charles Drew Center navigators will assist with Medicaid expansion. Food, activities and music will be available.
Nursing’s Gamma Pi at-Large Chapter wins fifth consecutive award
The UNMC College of Nursing’s and College of Saint Mary College of Nursing’s joint Gamma Pi at-Large Chapter of the Sigma Honor Society have been awarded the prestigious Chapter Key Award for a fifth time in a row.
The award is presented by the Sigma Honor Society for Nurses for excellence in chapter-related activities such as membership recruitment and retention, publicity and programming, professional and leadership development and local, national and international collaboration.
Some of the activities the Gamma Pi-at Large chapter members participated in were international speaking engagements, membership recruitment events, service grant awards, scholarships and research grants, and other public service events.
"It is a considerable honor to work with the Gamma Pi Chapter," said Therese Mathews, PhD, current president. "The members are a highly dedicated and professional group of nurses with a strong desire not only to advance scholarship in nursing, but also to improve the well-being of members in the community through education and service."
The Gamma Pi-at Large chapter, which has more than 400 members, will be formally recognized in November at the Sigma Biennial Convention in Washington D.C.
