After four years of serving both UNMC and the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Daniel J. Shipp, EdD, has been named vice chancellor for strategic initiatives and associate to the chancellor at UNMC. His new role at UNMC takes effect Nov. 1.

In this full-time leadership role at UNMC, Dr. Shipp will continue to oversee student success and enrollment programs/services, as well as aid in the coordination of campus strategic planning, support of campus wellness programs including the Center for Healthy Living, facilitation and growth of the iEXCEL Learning Academy and expansion of UNMC’s rural campus educational programs, specifically outreach with K-12 school districts and community colleges.

"I’m pleased that Dr. Shipp will be assuming this role at UNMC," said Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, chancellor at UNMC. "Dan is an accomplished administrator and a terrific colleague, and I look forward to him expanding his expertise to areas throughout the enterprise at UNMC. He will lead several important initiatives that are vital as we continue to serve our current students, develop career pathways to typically underserved areas, and serve the citizens across our state and around the world."

"I am excited for the opportunity to transition my focus fulltime to UNMC and embrace new responsibilities that will benefit students, faculty, staff and all Nebraskans," Dr. Shipp said. "I commend the work done these past few years by our student success teams at UNMC and UNO and am anxious to continue building on this work at UNMC in the coming months. I greatly value Dr. Gold’s leadership and am committed to helping the faculty and staff to continue advancing UNMC’s transformational mission."

Dr. Shipp is a nationally recognized higher education leader and innovator that has been responsible for designing student educational and support programs, services and facilities at multiple universities. He has been responsible for providing planning and project leadership to over $200 million worth of capital projects over the past 20 years. At UNO, he redesigned the structure of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management into a comprehensive Division of Student Success that has helped lead an institutional commitment to increasing student enrollment and graduation rates. Other highlighted accomplishments have included constructing a new campus visit center and residence hall, developing a new campus wellness center, creating new scholarship and student support programs, developing a subdivision focused on improving inclusion and equity outcomes, and leading the campus refresh of the Walter Scott Jr. Scholarship Program.

"I am delighted that Dr. Shipp is joining the UNMC leadership team full time," said Dele Davies, MD, senior vice chancellor for academic affairs. "Dan has helped revitalize our student success team and brings a lot of strategic skills and proven experience in improving the learning environment for our students. He also brings a portfolio of excellent Design Thinking skills and processes that will be valuable in support of our strategic vision and campus leadership team."

Dr. Shipp received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and holds a Master of Arts degree in education from UNO. He earned his EdD in educational leadership and administration from the University of the Pacific.

Prior to joining UNO, Dr. Shipp served as the associate vice president of student life at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, where he was responsible for leading the campus effort to design and build a $40 million University Center. He also has served as a senior staff member at the University of Missouri, where he provided project leadership to the design, development and implementation of the $50 million Mizzou Student Recreation and Athletic Complex.
