Three UNMC College of Public Health students have been named fellows with two national organizations.
Master of public health student Christian Minter and LaKaija Johnson, PhD, were recently named to the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) Emerging Leaders of Color Fellowship. Kylie Johnson, a student in the Master of Public Health program with a concentration in emergency preparedness, has been selected for the prestigious Presidential Management Fellowship.
"Kylie, LaKaija, and Christian are exceptional individuals and prodigious students of the science and practice of public health," said Ali Khan, MD, MPH, dean of the UNMC College of Public Health. "The college is so proud that they were selected for these highly competitive fellowships that will help showcase them as emerging national health leaders."
As NASHP fellows, Minter and Johnson will each be paired with a senior-level state advisor for seven months to engage in health policy projects across a range of topics including health equity, behavioral health, housing supports and services, and oral health.
"I’m excited to be a part of this fellowship and gain new skills and collaborators in the work of using health policy to dismantle oppressive systems and create equitable opportunities for all to thrive," Minter said.
"I am ecstatic to join the 2022 Cohort of NASHP ELC Fellows," Dr. LaKaija Johnson said. "I look forward to engaging with NASHP Academy members, staff and strategic partners to explore state health policy initiatives that center racial equity and social justice to improve population health."
As a Presidential Management Fellow, Kylie Johnson will join the flagship leadership development program at the entry level for advanced degree candidates. The PMF program attracts and selects the best candidates possible and is designed with a narrower focus of developing a cadre of potential government leaders. PMFs perform valuable service to the American people while jump-starting their careers, and receive full salary and benefits as well as challenging assignments, formal professional training, rotations to other agencies, feedback on their work, plus an opportunity to make government run more efficiently.
"I am so honored to have been selected as a Presidential Management Finalist. It is an incredible opportunity for me to utilize my education to further my passion for public service," Kylie Johnson said.
