An alum of both the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and UNMC, Dr. Malashock earned his medical degree in 1946. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the Philippines in 1946, then briefly practiced medicine in St. Louis and New York before coming home to Omaha. In 1953, at the completion of his residency training, Dr. Malashock joined a private urology practice associated with Clarkson Hospital. In 1965, he was the urologic surgeon on the team that performed the first two kidney transplants in Nebraska. That same year he became a UNMC faculty member and served as a clinical professor of surgery in the section of urology until his retirement.

He would go on to serve as president of Clarkson Hospital Medical Staff, Metropolitan Omaha Medical Society and the Nebraska Urological Society.

With his late wife, Sally, Dr. Malashock established the Dr. Edward and Sally Malashock Fund for the Interprofessional Experiential Center for Enduring Learning (iEXCEL). The couple also are the namesakes of the atrium inside the Dr. Edwin G. & Dorothy Balbach Davis Global Center.

In 1989, they created the Edward and Sally Malashock Chair of Urologic Surgery, a permanently endowed fund at the University of Nebraska Foundation that provides annual salary, research and program support for urologic surgery.

"Throughout his many years of service at UNMC, Dr. Malashock was a dedicated educator and mentor," said UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD. "His impact will be felt for generations to come, not only in the physicians he trained but through the endowed professorship he and his wife, Sally, created, as well as their support for cutting-edge educational technology at the Interprofessional Experiential Center for Enduring Learning. His legacy is enduring, indeed."

Said Chad LaGrange, MD, who holds the Malashock chair: "Dr. Malashock was a dedicated physician, mentor of students and philanthropist. We will always be grateful for the generosity and dedication he and his wife Sally showed to UNMC and the division of urologic surgery."

Dr. Malashock received numerous awards including the 2009 Nebraska Medical Center Legends Award, the 2002 College of Medicine Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumnus Award and the Outstanding Physician Award. He is included on the Wall of Honor at the UNMC Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education.

In a 2018 interview, Dr. Malashock said he enjoyed sharing his knowledge with students, providing mentorship as part of the volunteer faculty and reflected on his philanthropic contributions to UNMC. "Sally and I feel very fortunate to be able to contribute to the astounding growth of the medical center and the amazing service it provides to the health of the community."
