Jan Allen, PhD, associate dean of academic and student affairs at the graduate school at Cornell University, found herself becoming emotional, as she gave the keynote address at UNMC Graduate Studies annual honors convocation May 6 at the Omaha Conservatory of Music.
"Surprise us. Surprise yourself," she told the degree candidates, who had just been hooded by their mentors and would graduate the next day.
And as she wrapped up her speech, she could not hold back the tears.
"I told you, this is the most exciting day for us in graduate education," she said, acknowledging her evident emotion. "And I’ve only known you for about an hour."

Dr. Allen spoke to an audience that was there to honor 18 master of science candidates and 45 PhD candidates. Those candidates in attendance took part in the traditional hooding ceremony acknowledging their hard-won academic credentials.
Laura Flores, PhD, was honored with the Praesto Award, and Safwan Elkhatib, PhD, earned the Thomas Jefferson Ingenuity Award.
Pamela Carmines, PhD, former executive associate dean of graduate studies, was honored upon the occasion of her retirement. Dele Davies, MD, senior vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean of graduate studies, led the audience in singing "Happy Birthday" to Dr. Carmines, whose birthday is May 6.
Dr. Allen had advice for the graduating class, as keynote speakers often do. "Express gratitude frequently," she said. "It’s good for both you and the recipient."
Seek out a support network, and become part of one for others, she said. Dr. Allen invoked the Japanese proverb, "One kind word can warm three winter months."
And, be flexible, she said. She would not have envisioned her own career path.
"Be ready for all of the wonderful opportunities that will come along and upset your carefully crafted plans," she said.
Dr. Davies also offered words of advice for this latest graduating class.
"If you want to go somewhere quickly, go alone," he said. "But if you want to go far, go together."
