Omaha Women’s Health and Wellness Conference Oct. 13

Women are invited to attend the ninth annual Omaha Women’s Health and Wellness Conference on Friday, Oct. 13, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Holiday Inn Convention Centre, 72nd and Grover Streets.

The conference, titled “Making the Most of Your Future.” Educational health and wellness speakers, exhibits, continental breakfast and lunch, and free and low cost health screenings, will be included. The conference is sponsored by UNMC, the Olson Center for Women’s Health, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, The Nebraska Medical Center and Wellness Council of the Midlands.

The cost of the conference is $40. For an additional $30, nurses can receive 5.2 continuing education credits. Limited scholarships are available for women with financial restrictions.

Breakfast keynote speaker Marie Micheletto, psychotherapist and lecturer, Archdiocesan Consultation Service, will present “How to be a Star!”

Sara Nollette, certified nurse practitioner, UNMC Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, will make a presentation during a general session titled, “Health Promotion Through Prevention: Recommended Screening Tests for Women.”

Amy Schmid of the American Dairy Association and Dairy Council of Nebraska, will give the luncheon keynote address, titled “Be a Successful Loser,” which will focus on what it takes to maintain a healthy weight for life.

Participants can choose topics during two afternoon breakout sessions.

The first breakout sessions includes:


  • Successful Aging: Debunking the Myths,” by David Corbin, Ph.D., University of Nebraska at Omaha School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation;
  • “How to Cook with Health-Promoting Functional Foods,” by Nessie Ferguson, The Nebraska Medical Center Department of Clinical Nutrition; and
  • “Women & Stroke,” by Karen Bever, The Nebraska Medical Center.

The second afternoon breakout sessions include:


  • “Tired of Drugs or Surgery? Try this – The Use of Physical Activity in Health,” by Joe Siracusano, The Nebraska Medical Center Pain Management Program;
  • “Saving and Investing for a Secure Retirement,” by Shelley Kostrunek, Mutual of Omaha; and
  • “Women Caregivers: Keeping the Glass ½ Full,” by Alice Tvrdik, nurse practitioner, UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, Section of Geriatrics.

The closing session will feature a Tai’ Chi demonstration by Shandy Ramet of the Safety & Health Council of Greater Omaha.

Health screenings will include balance testing, blood pressure, body composition, flexibility, massage, postural screening for osteoporosis, yoga and Pilates. Information will be available about a variety of topics, including acupuncture, Alzheimer’s disease, aromatherapy, relaxation, cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic pain management, elder care, exercise, incontinence, osteoporosis, sleep disorders, and stress and coping.
