Curator of National Air and Space Museum to speak on campus

Dr. Dik Daso, curator of modern military at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, will speak at UNMC at noon on Tuesday, Nov. 14 in Durham Research Center, room 1005.

The Smithsonian lecture is one of several offered to UNMC and Nebraska Medical Center employees through a partnership with the Durham Western Heritage Museum.

Dr. Daso also acted as co-curator for “The Price of Freedom: Americans at War,” a permanent exhibition at the National Museum of American History that opened in November 2004.

Dr. Daso is a retired Air Force fighter pilot who logged more than 2,750 hours flying such aircraft as the RF-4C “Phantom,” the T-38 “Talon” and the F-15 “Eagle.”

He taught history at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and was chief of Air Force doctrine at Headquarters Air Force at the Pentagon for two years.

Dr. Daso earned his bachelor’s degree in history from the Air Force Academy in 1981. He also holds a doctorate in history from the University of South Carolina.

Dr. Daso retired from the U.S. Air Force in 2001 as a Lieutenant Colonel.

An evening lecture and reception will also be held at the Durham Western Heritage Museum in conjunction with the current traveling exhibition, “From the Home Front and the Front Lines.” The reception will begin at 5 p.m., with the lecture following at 6:30 p.m.
