UNMC medical students recently recognized two outstanding teachers — Drs. Barbara Hurlbert and Paul Larsen — with the Golden Apple Award for 2005-2006.

UNMC’s first and second-year medical students annually recognize outstanding teachers with the Golden Apple Award, which is presented by the medical center’s chapter of the American Medical Student Association.

“We are very lucky to have great faculty at UNMC,” said Nick Branting, second-year medical student and AMSA president. “The Golden Apple Award is the students’ opportunity to express our appreciation and recognize excellent teachers.”

Barbara Hurlbert, M.D., professor, anesthesiology, received the Golden Apple Award from the College of Medicine Class of 2008. Finalists were James Booth, Ph.D., associate professor, pathology and microbiology; and Geoffrey Thiele, Ph.D., professor, internal medicine-rheumatology.

Paul Larsen, M.D., professor, pediatrics neurology, received the 2005-2006 Golden Apple Award from the College of Medicine Class of 2009. Finalists were Kurtis Cornish, Ph.D., professor, cellular/integrative physiology; and William Chaney, Ph.D., associate professor, biochemistry and molecular biology.

“The winners and runners-up are to be congratulated for their great work,” said Gerald Moore, M.D., senior associate dean for academic affairs.
