The UNMC College of Medicine has created the Dean’s Clinical Excellence Awards to recognize outstanding clinical contributions by its faculty.

John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the College of Medicine, recently announced the awards in the following categories:

  • Excellence in Clinical Education
  • Excellence in Clinical Practice
  • Innovation in Clinical Medicine

“UNMC has outstanding faculty members who are dedicated to the education and training of medical students, providing compassionate and quality care to patients and furthering advances in scientific knowledge through research,” Dr. Gollan said. “It is time to formally recognize those individuals who are committed to clinical excellence in these areas.”

There will be one $25,000 award annually for each of the award categories. All regular, full-time clinical faculty members are eligible for the awards, which will be presented in March. The awards are sponsored by Wayne Ryan, Ph.D., founder, chairman and CEO of Streck, an Omaha-based developer and manufacturer of hematology, chemistry and immunology products for the clinical laboratory.

Each award will be for a period of one academic year; however, awards may be extended up to two additional academic years, depending on the recommendation of the review committee. Awards may be used to supplement salary or support a specific clinical program/research.

Nominations also are being accepted for a new Dean’s Award for Excellence in Basic Science Education to annually recognize outstanding educational contributions by basic science faculty in the College of Medicine.

“We are grateful to Dr. Ryan for supporting the Dean’s Clinical Excellence Awards,” Dr. Gollan said. “These awards further distinguish our faculty, the College of Medicine and UNMC.”

Dr. Ryan, professor emeritus in the UNMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, where he is on the research faculty, agreed. “These awards reward and recognize the people at the medical center who are engaged in taking care of patients. There are many people working hard every day who aren’t recognized. This is a small way of acknowledging their work.”

Any academic clinical department chair, clinical section chief, other clinical faculty member within the UNMC College of Medicine, or any person who is knowledgeable of the skills and accomplishments of potential candidates, may submit a nomination for the Clinical Excellence Awards. Each nomination letter should be a maximum of one page and include a copy of the candidate’s CV. The letter also should identify which award is being requested.

The nomination letter should contain objective data in support of the nominee, identifying outstanding characteristics and criteria including, but not limited to, teaching evaluations, teaching honors, outstanding leadership in advancing learning and recognition from peers on clinical abilities, innovation and leadership.

Nominations are due by Jan. 31. Send nomination letters and CVs to: Sharon Secora; 986545 Nebraska Medical Center; Omaha, NE 68198-5445.

A College of Medicine review committee consisting of the senior associate dean for clinical affairs, the senior associate dean for academic affairs and the senior associate dean for administration will annually review award nominations. Recommendations will then be submitted to the dean for review and final approval.
