College of Medicine creates basic science education award

The UNMC College of Medicine has created the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Basic Science Education to annually recognize outstanding educational contributions by its basic science faculty.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to formally recognize the outstanding educational work of our full-time basic science faculty,” said John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the College of Medicine.

There will be one or two $10,000 awards available for distribution annually. Awards, which will be presented in March, may be used to supplement salary or support a specific program/research. Funds will be provided from the dean’s office.

In addition to the basic science education award, Dr. Gollan also is taking nominations for the new Dean’s Clinical Excellence Awards to recognize outstanding clinical contributions by College of Medicine faculty.

Any department chair, section chief, other faculty member within the UNMC College of Medicine, or any person who is knowledgeable of the skills and accomplishments of potential candidates, may submit a nomination for the Basic Science Education Excellence Award. Nomination letters should not exceed one page and must include a copy of the candidate’s CV.

The nomination letter should contain objective data in support of the nominee identifying outstanding characteristics and criteria including, but not limited to, teaching evaluations, teaching honors, outstanding leadership in advancing learning and recognition from peers on teaching abilities, innovation and leadership.

Nomination letters and CVs are due by Jan. 31 to: Sharon Secora; 986545 Nebraska Medical Center; Omaha, NE 68198-5445.

A College of Medicine review committee consisting of the associate dean for basic science research, the senior associate dean for academic affairs and the senior associate dean for administration will review nominations annually. Recommendations will be submitted to the dean for review and final approval.
