ITS recommends not upgrading Windows Vista, Office 2007

A note from UNMC’s Information Technology Services about Windows Vista, Office 2007

Microsoft Windows Vista and Office 2007 were released at midnight on Monday.

There has been extensive press coverage about these products. However, nationally many companies and reviewers are recommending individuals wait before switching to Vista or Office 2007. UNMC, like these companies, is recommending not upgrading to Windows Vista and Office 2007 at this time. ITS recommends waiting because there are multiple concerns relative to the product and its adoption, such as the following:

  • Many non-Microsoft applications are not yet compatible with Vista, causing the software not to run at all or producing errors when running these applications.
  • Many existing computers are not able to run Vista effectively, requiring costly upgrades to hardware.
  • The user interface has changed dramatically with Vista and Office 2007, probably requiring many people to experience considerable time to adjust or train to use the new products, especially with the new Office 2007.

UNMC has formed a work team to test Vista and Office 2007 with UNMC applications and will continue to provide information to the campus about upgrading. When deployment dates are set, ITS will begin offering training on these new products. In the meantime, UNMC is working to ensure that new computer purchases continue to ship with Windows XP until UNMC applications are compatible with Vista. The UNMC test group is recommending, however, that all new computer purchases should be fully Vista compatible.
