Describe your research in 25 words or less.

The overall goal of our research is to define the role of host-tumor interaction in the process of tumor progression and metastasis and to develop targeted therapeutics.

How did you decide to pursue this area of research?

During my postdoctoral training at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, I was introduced to the concept of organ-specific metastasis and heterogeneous nature of tumors. The complex unexpected results of some of my initial experiments formed the basis of my current area of scientific research.

When did you realize you were interested in research?

While working on a research project for my master’s degree.

What are the greatest challenges in research today?

Lack of funding and public support for scientific research.

Best advice for new researchers?

Maintain focus, be persuasive and learn to write convincing and good grant applications.

When an experiment stalls, what drives you to continue on?

My optimism keeps me going. I try to comprehend the unanticipated results and understand the underlying biological process. This often brings out something novel and exciting!

Who has been your greatest teacher?

My parents. One of the things they taught me was to do my best and never give up. This not only helps me in my professional career as researcher, but also in becoming a better human being.

Tell us about your family and hobbies outside the lab.

My wife is a clinical cytogeneticist and a researcher at UNMC. I have five brothers and sisters, all of them residing in India. We are very close to our families and frequently visit them in India. My wife and I enjoy traveling, (especially to National Parks), gardening, music and movies.

Globally, describe the most notable research achievement ever?

In my opinion, research is an ongoing process and every scientific investigation is notable because it is doing its part in solving a bigger puzzle. Defining any one research achievement with global impact would be disregarding the intermediate studies that led to the understanding and outcome of a landmark achievement.

Clarify a common misconception about research?

Not everyone appreciates the complex, time consuming and difficult nature of scientific research. Today, research not only requires thorough scientific understanding of a particular subject, but also demands good communicating skills to market your research and obtain funding.

What would you tell a student interested in a research career?

Think independently, work hard, remain determined and never give up.

List three things few people know about you.

  • I grew up in a small village in India.
  • I enjoy reading non-fiction and discussing global politics.
  • I like to cook.
