Public meeting about Saddle Creek relocation Thursday

At an open house public hearing Thursday, the public will have its first opportunity to provide input into the Saddle Creek Road Relocation Feasibility Study.

The open house, which runs from 6 to 8 p.m. in the cafeteria of the Omaha Public Schools, TAC Building, 3215 Cuming St., also will enable residents to become familiar with the project. A formal presentation will be given at 6:15 p.m., and repeated at 7:15 p.m.

The feasibility study will explore the possible relocation of Saddle Creek Road on the western edge of the UNMC campus. The project study area is generally bounded by Cuming Street on the north, Center Street on the south, 42nd Street on the east and 48th Street on the west.

“This is a great opportunity for anyone living or working within the study area to provide valuable input, such as opinions in regards to traffic congestion, pedestrian crossings, and/or flooding along Saddle Creek,” said Ken Hansen, assistant vice chancellor, UNMC Facilities Management & Planning. “Individuals also will be able to provide input into what they would like the area to become if Saddle Creek Road moves to the west.”

Conducted by HDR Engineering Inc., the feasibility study will investigate roadway relocation options and consider the benefits and impact of the realignment of Saddle Creek Road on transportation improvements, drainage improvements for flood control, adjacent neighborhoods and area businesses.

The feasibility study will be done along with other city transportation studies that are investigating ways to improve traffic flow and economic opportunities for midtown Omaha.

Phase 1 of the study is scheduled for completion this August.

The public will have opportunities for additional input at meetings to be scheduled in late May or June with results presented in August.
