New parking rates announced for UNMC/NHS employees

UNMC/NHS will gain approximately 1,200 employee parking stalls in mid-November when construction is completed on Lot 50 – – the new $19.3 million parking structure along Emile Street. As a result, employees will have the option of moving into the six-level parking garage or to a more convenient parking lot on campus.

“The new parking garage will provide close, convenient parking for employees who choose to park there,” said Tina Spencer, manager of Parking & Cashiering Services. “As some employees move to Lot 50 it will free up space in parking lots across campus. As a result, many more employees will have an opportunity to park closer than they currently do.”

For the first time in four years, parking rates will increase effective July 1. The new rates will increase parking costs by $4.75 per month for most lots. The rate of the new parking garage, Lot 50, as well as the two existing parking structures (lots 4 and 5), will be $23 per month. Fees for lots 15 and 16, located on the east side of campus, are not increasing.

The rate increase is necessary to cover annual operating expenses such as ongoing repairs, maintenance of lots, lot improvements, the Campus Area Transit (C.A.T.) shuttle service, administrative costs and the cost of providing additional parking. It also covers a portion of the new multi-million garage that was not privately funded.

“Parking Services continues to look for ways to keep costs down and employee parking rates low,” Spencer said. “Unfortunately, inflationary factors have made it necessary to adjust the rates. It is a decision that comes only after careful consideration and debate.”

Employees who wish to move to Lot 50 — or any other UNMC/NHS lot — should contact Parking Services to have their name added to a “move” list. Parking Services can be reached by calling 559-5873 or e-mailing unmc parking@unmc.edu. Watch future issues of UNMC Today for details on how to request a parking reassignment electronically.

The renewal process for employee parking will begin later this month.
