Robert Binhammer, Ph.D., has received the UNMC College of Medicine and Class of 1962 Basic Science Outstanding Teacher Award.

The award, announced during Tuesday’s AOA/Faculty Honors Convocation, was created to inspire and foster continued excellence in classroom teaching and honor, substantially and annually, one distinguished professor who has contributed greatly to the education of aspiring medical students.

“Dr. Binhammer’s expertise and teaching skills have left a lasting impression on thousands of medical students,” said John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the College of Medicine. “He has enlightened many students with his depth of knowledge and quick wit and helped ensure that each received a solid foundation in anatomy.”

A faculty member in the department of genetics, cell biology and anatomy since 1979, Dr. Binhammer has played a major role in the instruction of medical students in gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, living anatomy and problem-based learning. Dr. Binhammer, who serves as director of the medical curriculum’s first and fourth cores, has received innumerable teaching awards over his 50 years of teaching — nearly 30 of which have been at UNMC.

His numerous awards include the Alvin Earle Outstanding Health Service Educator Award, the Hirschman prize for Teaching Excellence, the Golden Apple, and the Outstanding Teaching Award from the Faculty Senate.
