Sandy Goetzinger-Comer, director of public affairs, will pursue a new assignment at UNMC to strategically position the campus in a leadership role nationally in the field of emerging communications technologies. She will leave her current position July 1 to focus on this new opportunity.

Her title will be senior associate director for new media in the department of public affairs. She will continue to serve as director while a national search is conducted for her successor.

“To succeed in the rapidly changing world of communications, UNMC must promote its brand in this new competitive environment,” said Bob Bartee, vice chancellor for external affairs.

The public is turning from traditional media — such as newspapers, radio and television — to seek the information they want through new electronic channels, such as audio and video podcasts, blogs and text messaging, on their own schedules and delivered in the formats they prefer.

“This is a new and exciting area in the field of public relations and communications. I look forward to putting UNMC at the forefront of academic health centers by staking out this new ground for UNMC,” Goetzinger-Comer said.

Goetzinger-Comer, who has served as director for 12 years, will be involved in the design and implementation of these new communications initiatives.

“The future calls for smart planning for the use of electronic communications via the Web to engage our friends and build affinity groups who advocate for UNMC,” Bartee said. “Sandy will lead us to that future.”
