Friday a national day of tribute for Virginia Tech

The alumni association from Virginia Tech University is calling for a nationwide “Day of Hokie Hope” on Friday to honor the victims of Monday’s campus shooting.

All Americans are being asked to wear the school’s colors — orange and maroon — in memory of those killed during the shooting, the worst in U.S. history, said Sue Logsdon, compliance coordinator of UNMC’s Institutional Review Board and a 1995 Virginia Tech graduate.

“I don’t think that it has really set in yet,” Logsdon said when describing her feelings about the massacre that left 33 dead. “If you read the Virginia Tech Web site, the quote from Nikki Giovanni sums up how every Hokie feels.”

In the quote, Giovanni — a Virginia Tech distinguished professor, poet and activist — said, “We will continue to invent the future through our blood and tears and through all our sadness … We are the Hokies …”

Logsdon — who played on the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team from 1990 to 1994 and was a starter for three years — said Blacksburg, Va., and the campus in general was a very welcoming place.

“As cliche as it sounds, it is truly shocking that something like this would happen there,” Logsdon said.
