Nursing students present research, receive awards at colloquium

UNMC College of Nursing students participated in a graduate student research colloquium in early April. Eighteen posters and two oral presentations were presented during the colloquium, which was co-sponsored by the college, Gamma Pi Chapter-At-Large and Sigma Theta Tau International.

Here are the results of the colloquium:

Brandy Nygren and Lyndann Sokolowski received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in an Oral Presentation for their research titled, “Transition to Motherhood in Low-Income, Pregnant 23-29 Year Olds in Nebraska.” Their advisers were Margaret Kaiser, Ph.D., Katherine Kaiser, Ph.D., and Teresa Barry.

Jamie Hansen, Donalee Hartman and Sonia Sublett received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in a Master’s Student Poster Presentation. Their research was titled, “Pelvic Floor Stimulation for Women Experiencing Urinary Incontinence Outcome Measures and Quality of Life.” Janice Twiss, Ph.D., was their adviser.

There was a tie for the Dean’s Award for Excellence in a Doctoral Student Poster Presentation. The award was shared by Lisa Bauer for her presentation, “Correlates of Cognitive Functions in Heart Failure Patients,” and Kimberly Wielgus for her presentation, “Methodology Issues When Using Actigraphy to Measure Circadian Rhythms in Adults with Cancer.”

Bauer’s faculty adviser was Bunny Pozehl, Ph.D., while Ann Berger, Ph.D., served as Wielgus’ adviser.

Tamala Hanson and Julie Werner received the Muriel Munchrath Gamma Pi Chapter-at-Large, Sigma Theta Tau Award for Excellence in a Nursing Research Presentation for their poster, “Pressure Ulcer Prevention in Critical Care Patients.” Their adviser was Janet Cuddigan, Ph.D.

The Alumni Association Rena E. Boyle Award for Excellence in Clinical Nursing Research went to Jessica Morrell for her poster, “Difference in Frequency and Distress of Perimenopausal Symptoms in Users and Nonusers of Hormone Therapy.” Her adviser was Dr. Twiss.
