UNMC’s Michael Miloro, D.M.D., M.D., recently was elected to serve on the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) examination committee for a seven-year term.

Dr. Miloro is the Leon F. Davis, D.D.S., M.D., Distinguished Chair of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Professor of Surgery at UNMC. He also serves as section chief and program director of UNMC’s Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

“It is a prestigious honor to be chosen for the responsibility to ensure competence amongst my peers during the board certification process,” Dr. Miloro said. “Serving on the ABOMS board is an honor for myself, the department and UNMC. There are currently no other surgeons on the ABOMS from Nebraska.”

“The department is very proud of Dr Miloro’s accomplishments,” said Byers Shaw Jr., M.D., professor and chairman of the UNMC Department of Surgery. “Appointment to the board is a great honor, reserved for the recognized leaders in a field.”

ABOMS is responsible for certifying oral and maxillofacial surgeons through both a written and oral examination process. When elected to the examination committee by peers, a surgeon is charged with the responsibility of contributing to the process of “board certification” for all oral surgeons in the United States. Typically it involves a week of intensive oral examinations given each February in Dallas (the Dallas location will begin in February 2008; prior to that it has been in Chicago).

There are approximately 6,500 practicing oral surgeons in the United States, of which, the majority are “board-certified” (5,250). As with other medical and dental specialties, board certification has become almost a requisite step in the professional career, Dr. Miloro said, since most hospitals and third party insurance plans require board certification for medical staff privileges, as well as to participate in insurance plans.

Each year, approximately 150 to 200 oral surgeons undergo the board certification process. There are approximately 30 to 40 examiners, with about five to 10 new examiners elected each year, of which Dr. Miloro is one this year.
