New leadership positions announced in UNMC’s ob/gyn department

Carl Smith, M.D., chairman of UNMC’s department of obstetrics & gynecology, has announced the appointment of four new faculty leaders. The appointments are:

Kelly Molpus, M.D., department vice chairman

Kelly Molpus, M.D., assistant professor and director of gynecologic oncology, has been named vice chairman of the department of obstetrics & gynecology. Dr. Molpus joined the UNMC faculty in January 2000 after serving on the faculty at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. A graduate of the University of South Florida College of Medicine, Dr. Molpus did his residency training at Vanderbilt University and his fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Harvard Medical School / Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. Molpus is board-certified in obstetrics/gynecology and gynecologic oncology and is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons.

As vice chairman of the department, Dr. Molpus will assist Dr. Smith administratively and also will assume the role of compliance officer for medical billing and documentation.

Marvin Stancil, M.D., division director, general obstetrics & gynecology

Marvin Stancil, M.D., has been named director of general obstetrics & gynecology. An assistant professor, Dr. Stancil joined the UNMC faculty in March 1997. He served as a member of the Primary Care Network for two years and became a full-time member of the ob/gyn faculty in July 1999. Dr. Stancil is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine and did his residency training through UMKC at the Truman Medical Center in Kansas City. Prior to joining UNMC, he spent several years in the Air Force and Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha. He is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology.

As director of general obstetrics & gynecology, Dr. Stancil is responsible for the medical direction of the newly established division of general ob/gyn. His responsibilities include serving as medical director of outpatient clinics and medical director of the Maternal Care and Family Planning Programs.

Teresa G. Berg, M.D., residency program director

Teresa Berg, M.D., has returned to UNMC and will serve as residency program director. She rejoined the UNMC faculty last month after nearly two years at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, Ark. An associate professor, Dr. Berg is a graduate of the University of South Dakota School of Medicine and did her residency at UNMC. She served briefly on the UNMC faculty before going to the Medical College of Georgia to complete a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine. After finishing her sub-specialty training, Dr. Berg returned to UNMC. She later moved to Arkansas. She is board-certified in obstetrics/gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine.

As residency program director, Dr. Berg will provide direction and leadership for UNMC’s ACGME-accredited residency program, a four-year program with three residents per year.

Sonja Kinney, M.D., director, third-year student clerkship

Sonja Kinney, M.D., has been named director of the third-year student clerkship program. An assistant professor, Dr. Kinney joined the UNMC faculty in August 2001. She received her medical degree from Yeshiva University’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City and did her residency in ob/gyn at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. She is board-certified in obstetrics & gynecology.

In her new position, Dr. Kinney will fill the role of Dr. N. Jean Amoura, who is taking a faculty leave of absence to pursue a master’s degree in public health.
