College of Nursing hosting ‘CSI Nebraska’ program

Those interested in nursing and who enjoy television shows featuring crime scene investigations may want to attend a one-day “CSI Nebraska” hosted by the UNMC College of Nursing.

Program participants will learn about forensics and forensic nursing, as well as the wide variety of nursing specialties.

Those age 17 and older are invited to attend a one-day program from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the UNMC College of Nursing on the following days: July 16, 17, 18 and 19. Parents of anyone under 19 are required to sign a release. The cost to attend to program is $15, which includes a T-shirt and lunch.

“There’s tremendous interest in CSI,” said Dani Eveloff, a nurse recruiter in the UNMC College of Nursing. “Nurses are like investigators. When a patient is admitted, nurses gather clues through history, physical assessment and tests to determine what the problem is and how best to treat it.”

Participants will hear presentations about nurses as investigators, the role of the Nebraska Public Health Lab and biosafety labs.

Internationally known forensic nurse, Jan Goldsmith of Des Moines, Iowa, will discuss crime investigations and forensic nursing cases. Douglas County Chief Deputy and acting county coroner Tom Haynes will talk about how autopsies uncover crime scene clues and Sarpy County Lt. Russ Zeeb will discuss crime scenes. Laura Bergevin of the YWCA will talk about sexual assault.

Participants will watch a scenario unfold in which a human patient simulator “dies” and specialists try to determine the cause. They also will tour The Nebraska Medical Center’s Biocontainment Unit and emergency room and learn about the heart and lung by The Nebraska Medical Center’s Organ Recovery Services department and the Lion’s Eye Bank of Nebraska.

Space is limited to 30 participants each day. Pre-registration is required and can be completed by contacting Dani Eveloff at 559-5184 or develoff@unmc.edu. Anyone who has eye glasses they’d like to donate are invited to bring for donation to the Nebraska Eye Bank.
