Core Facility Focus on the Microarray Core Section

Gene chips such as this and the fluidics machine in the background are some of the equipment featured in the Microarray Core Section.

The Microarray Core Section is one of several Core facilities available for use by UNMC researchers.

Core facilities, sometimes called shared resources, provide sophisticated, expensive technology and expertise that no single lab would have the financial resources to purchase and learn. These fee-for-service resources help investigators maximize productivity by providing access to technologies, services and scientific consultation at a reasonable cost. Core facilities also provide stability, reliability, cost-effectiveness and quality control that would be difficult to achieve otherwise.

Core Facility name: UNMC DNA Microarray Core Facility

Core Facility location: 20120 Munroe-Meyer Institute

Services offered: Comprehensive DNA Microarray and functional genomic services and support including genome-wide gene expression and genotyping. The Microarray Core Facility provides a variety of services, including RNA quantification and integrity assessment, preparation and processing of the samples to include labeling, hybridization, scanning and assistance with fundamental data analysis. In addition to genome wide expression and genotyping, the facility can perform chromosomal copy number assessment for human DNA samples. Microarrays are available that will analyze genome-wide expression at the exon level of the gene, as well as methylation analysis and DNA-protein interactions. The facility will also generate custom DNA microarrays for investigators use in targeted expression measurements.

Featured equipment: The facility houses the complete most up-to-date Affymetrix GeneChip System including the hybridization oven, fluidics, and 3000 7G high density laser scanner. The facility also has all the instrumentation necessary for spotted microarray experiments including the OmniGrid robotic printer and the Axon 4000b scanner.

Testimonials: The Microarray Core services approximately 40 different laboratories at UNMC and throughout the state of Nebraska annually. The types of studies the core is involved in are quite widespread and far reaching. Some examples include T and B-cell lymphoma, leukemia, breast cancer, neurodegeneration due to HIV infection, retinal degeneration, birth and cardiac defects due to folic acid and homocysteine metabolism.
