Blood donation slots available for medical center drive

Several spots are available for those who wish to donate blood during The Nebraska Medical Center’s blood drive on Wednesday between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Clarkson Tower’s Storz Pavilion.

Of the 96 available donation slots, only 51 had been filled as of Thursday morning. Most of the openings are between 9:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.

Medical facilities, including The Nebraska Medical Center, depend on donated blood to conduct surgeries, transfusions and other treatments.

“With vacations and students being out of town, the number of donors this time of year shrinks considerably but the demand for blood doesn’t,” said Kate Sullivan, a donor recruitment representative for the Midwest Region of the American Red Cross. “We’re calling on people to step up.”

Donors can schedule appointments for the drive by calling The Nebraska Medical Center Wellness Center at 552-2775, the Red Cross 341-2723, or online at http://givebloodgivelife.org.

Once at the Web site, enter the campus zip code, 68198, click on the red “Donate Blood Now, Find A Drive” tab on the top right side of screen. On the left side of the next screen, click on “Search by Sponsor Code,” then enter 495 to find the Clarkson Tower blood drive and schedule an appointment.
