A Nebraska family is growing by leaps and bounds.

Jason and Jodi Cast of Beaver Crossing welcomed four tiny miracles, a set of healthy quadruplets, on Thursday.

The babies, three boys and one girl, were delivered by a scheduled cesarean section at The Nebraska Medical Center.

“I was so relieved to hear them all cry. I just wanted to know that they were okay,” Jodi Cast said. “We’re happy that everything went so well.”

The births follow an extensive period of bed rest for Jodi. She’s spent the past six weeks in the hospital and had spent time at home before that. It all paid off, allowing for the quadruplets to grow and develop.

Amazingly, they were born just six weeks early at 34 weeks gestation.

“This is an extraordinary event that turned out very well. We could not have asked for a better outcome. Mom did everything we asked of her. She minimized her activity, she agreed to be hospitalized, she did everything we needed,” said Carl Smith, M.D., professor and chairman of the UNMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. “The situation could easily have been very different with four babies being born extremely early and facing significant challenges.”

“We are so thankful for all of the doctors and the nurses. We’ve had excellent care through every step of this process,” Cast said. “It makes all the difference in the world to have a medical team that we trust.”

The quadruplets are doing well. They are receiving care in The Nebraska Medical Center’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit where they will spend at least the next few weeks.

The babies’ names and birth weights are as follows:

  • Grant Herbert — 3 pounds, 12 ounces
  • Olivia Kaye — 4 pounds, 11 ounces
  • Benjamin Ray — 3 pounds, 6 ounces
  • Alex Jason — 3 pounds, 13 ounces

Grant was delivered first, followed by Olivia, Benjamin and Alex. Each arrived one minute apart.

The quadruplets join a big brother, two-year-old Garrett. The proud grandparents are Gerald and Jane Rumbeck of Amherst, Neb., and Kenny and Doloros Cast of Beaver Crossing.
