Dmitry Oleynikov, M.D., an associate professor of surgery-general surgery and director of education and training for the Center for Minimally Invasive and Computer Assisted Surgery, guides University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate engineering student Amy Lehman through a simulated gall bladder surgery during a recent symposium hosted by the Center for Advanced Surgical Techniques (CAST).

The symposium was designed to introduce participants to new areas of research and the enhanced educational capabilities that surgical simulation offers.

Surgical simulators on display allowed symposium attendees to practice removing a gall bladder and perform a colonoscopy.

“We want to show people what is out there in terms of technological tools to educate and train surgeons,” said CAST executive director Marsha Morien.

The symposium also featured presentations about surgical simulators and other aspects of surgical education.
